Program Overview. The fellowship is a three year program for pediatrics residency trained applicants, and a two year program for emergency medicine residency trained applicants. Fellowship applicants begin applying to August cycle ACGME fellowship programs. With approximately 31,000 pediatric visits per year, you will see a vast range of clinical pathology. During the first year, fellows spend 4 months of time in the pediatric emergency department, several blocks of time in outside rotations including PICU, sedation, and anesthesia at Comer Children's Hospital, Adult Emergency Medicine/EMS and Trauma at The University of Chicago, a month of elective, and a month of vacation. Our fellows and residents are supervised in our pediatric emergency department by Board-certified/Board-eligible PEM faculty, including one faculty member who is also a board-certified toxicologist. Applicant must be board certified in Emergency Medicine, or Pediatric Emergency Medicine or board- eligible in Emergency Medicine or Pediatric Emergency Medicine and obtain certification within 5 years of appointment. Faculty from Baystate Children's Hospital supervise fellows on additional rotations in pediatric intensive care, neonatal resuscitation, pediatric anesthesia, pediatric radiology, and abuse evaluation. It has since grown tremendously in size and depth. While we offer separate curricula for emergency medicine residency graduates and pediatric residency graduates, all of our graduates have passed the PEM Boards on their first attempt.
